About i-act

The i-act model and courses have been designed by leading Chartered Psychologists and Mental Health Professionals in the field; they are evidence-based courses which have been approved by The Wellbeing Community. The i-act course is a one-day course which includes a 152-page/168-page evidence-based i-act course manual and resource pack. This pack is given to all participants and offers further information, awareness and signposting to a range of issues which may have an impact on a persons mental health and wellbeing (in the main: depression, anxiety and psychosis but also a little information about personality disorders, suicide intervention, dementia, learning difficulties and disabilities, self-harm, eating disorders, etc.). The i-act course maintains a focus on common mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, but it differs from some other mental health awareness training courses in that it also addresses how we might improve wellbeing in order to build resilience. i-act gives practical guidance and tools for how we might improve our own mental health and wellbeing and support others who may have a mental health or wellbeing issue. It informs managers as to what they need to know and offers tools for managing and improving mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

By using the 152-page/168-page evidence-based i-act course manual and attending the one-day i-act training course, participants will build skills and confidence in how to use the i-act tools, which will help them to monitor and evaluate their progress. The i-act course is relaxed, interactive and enjoyable.

There are two core versions of the i-act course: the i-act course for managers and the i-act course for individuals. The i-act model is the same within both courses but it has slight differences depending upon whether the course is for managers or for individuals. Versions of i-act have been especially tailored for specific sectors (for example, i-act for Universities, i-act for Union Reps, and i-act for The Housing Sector). Additional versions have been developed  addressing stress, depression, personality disorders and psychosis (see below).

i-act does not train you to be any kind of mental health professional, practitioner or counsellor, but it does give some basic skills for how the lay person may best support someone with mental health issues and it provides guidance and signposting as to where we might gain further help and support.

Each participant attending an i-act course receives a 152/168-page fully-referenced and evidence-based course manual and resource pack, a certificate of attendance and free membership to The Wellbeing Community. In addition to this, participants attending the managers’ i-act course also receive free registration and certification as an approved i-act manager and a 168-page fully-referenced and evidence-based managers’ course manual and resource pack.

i-act - The Course for Managers

The i-act course for managers is aimed at supporting managers to manage mental health and wellbeing in the workplace (for example when a member of staff is in distress and/or discloses a mental health issue), and it offers practical tools to assist and support managers concerning best practice. The course also highlights what managers need to know with regard to managing mental health in the workplace (for example regarding legislation and The Health and Safety Executive).

Course Objectives: The mental health and wellbeing course for managers aims to:

  • Give managers a greater understanding of mental health and wellbeing issues and recognise when colleagues may need further help and support

  • Provide some practical tools for promoting positive wellbeing in the workplace in order to help build resilience for ourselves as managers and for colleague

  • Offer guidance and advice for how managers may connect with colleagues who may be experiencing a mental health or wellbeing issue

  • Equip managers with practical tools, a resource pack and signposting to further help and support concerning mental health and wellbeing issues.

i-act - The Course for employees

The i-act course for individuals helps individuals to manage their own mental health and wellbeing, build resilience and utilise practical tools. It also provides guidance on how to support others who may have a mental health or wellbeing issue.

Course Objectives: The mental health and wellbeing course for employees aims to:

  • Give participants a greater understanding of mental health and wellbeing issues and recognise when we may need further help and support.

  • Provide some practical tools for managing stress, anxiety and low mood, and for promoting positive wellbeing in order to help build our resilience.

  • Offer guidance and advice for how we may connect with colleagues who may be experiencing a mental health or wellbeing issue.

  • Equip participants with a resource pack and signposting to further help and support concerning mental health and wellbeing issues.

Creating a workplace culture for positive mental health and wellbeing

All i-act courses come with a comprehensive evidence-based manual, toolkit and resource pack for each course participant

i-act Instructors

The i-act tool, model and courses are licenced and copyrighted products and can only be delivered by an approved and licenced i-act Instructor. i-act Instructors are assessed, approved, monitored and quality-assured by the i-act licence holder. Individuals wishing to become an approved i-act Instructor may apply to do so. This involves an application process, attendance and assessment during a three-day i-act Instructor training programme and post i-act Instructor training assessment and development. During this programme, participants will be given the tools and resources needed to become an i-act Instructor, so that they may then go on to deliver the i-act model and course to their own staff, within their own organisations or as a freelance trainer. Once approved as an i-act Instructor, ongoing support will be provided in accordance with the i-act Instructor licence agreement, enabling access to resources (such as i-act course manuals) to continue to deliver the i-act course as frequently as required. You don’t need to be an expert in mental health to apply to become an i-act Instructor and then go on to deliver the i-act course, as each participant receives a copy of the 150/170 -page course manual and resource pack. However, you will need to have skills and be confident in delivering training courses before you apply to become an i-act Instructor.
